Obituary for Edward C. Lessman

EDWARD C. LESSMAN

Edward C. Lessman, age 94 of Dalton, NE passed away at the SRMC Extended Care, Thursday, July 14, 2016.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, July 20th at the United Church of the Plains Trinity Site in Dalton with Pastor Eric Alm officiating. Burial will follow in the Dalton Cemetery. Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Tuesday from 1-7:00 P.M. with family present from 4:30 to 6:00 P.M. As an expression of sympathy, friends may wish to donate to a charity of their choice.
Gehrig-Stitt Chapel & Cremation Service, LLC is in charge of Mr. Lessman’s care and funeral arrangements.
Edward Charles Lessman, the son of Charles and Frieda (Lilje) Lessman, was born on March 4, 1922 at Wayne, NE. He moved to Cheyenne County, NE with his parents and four brothers and three sisters. He attended Salem Lutheran Parochial School for eight years and High School in Gurley and Sidney. Edward later graduated from Coyne Electric School at Chicago, IL in 1942. He then worked for Fitch Electric of Cheyenne, WY. On April 27, 1942, Edward was united in marriage to Verena Heine in Chicago. In November of 1942, he was drafted into the United States Army to serve during World War II. Following his medical discharge in November 1943, Edward returned to Nebraska to help his parents with their farming and ranching and continued farming and ranching until his retirement.
He was a fireman on the Dalton Fire Department for five years, served on numerous boards including two Coop Boards, the School Board and was Treasurer for Salem Lutheran Church for eight years. He was a member of the Sidney Elks Lodge and worked part-time for the ASC Office (now FSA) as Field Supervisor for more than forty years.
Edward and Verena had three sons, Lonnie, Larry and Milan. They moved to the Dalton area in the mid-1940s and later moved into Dalton where they remained until their deaths.
Survivors include (3) sons: Lonnie and wife Carilyn, Larry and wife Becky all of Fort Collins, CO., Milan and wife Cindy of Dalton; (6) grandchildren, (9) great-grandchildren and (1) sister: LaVern Mosel of Dallas, TX.
Edward was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, his parents, (4) brothers, (2) sisters and numerous extended family members.
