Obituary for Carol J Franzen
Carol Jean Franzen, age 85, of Sidney, passed away at SkyView of Bridgeport, NE on Sunday, February 27, 2022. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church 13 miles east of Gurley on County Road 46 with Pastor Leon “Bud” Gillespie and Pastor Chad Rademacher officiating. Burial will take place in the Weyerts Cemetery. Services will be recorded and available on the website. Memorials can be made in Carol’s name to the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Saturday, March 5th from 1-6:00 P.M.

Carol was born March 12, 1936 at Wittenberg, MO to Earl Harry and Edna Frieda (Leimbach) Lungwitz. At the age of 2, she moved with her mother to Cheyenne County, NE and was adopted by Merle Christofferson when he married Edna. Carol was united in marriage to Raymond Eugene Franzen on August 30, 1953 at Gurley. The couple lived on a farm near Gurley until Ray was drafted into the Army during the Korean Conflict. Carol lived with Ray’s parents before joining Ray for his last station in Hawaii.
The couple returned to their own farm 11 miles east of Gurley on Rush Creek where they raised their two sons – Duane and Tim. In 1970, Ray and Carol moved to Ft. Collins, CO where Ray worked for Poudre Valley REA until moving into Sidney in 1972 where they lived until their passing.
Carol was a member of Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church and attended Holy Trinity Lutheran Church while living in Sidney. Ray and Carol sang in the choir at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for several years.
Carol was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Cheyenne County Art Guild, the Sunshine Club, and the Young at Heart Group at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Carol is survived by her sons Duane and his wife Marie Franzen of Greeley, CO and Tim and his wife Lori Franzen of Sidney; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren (and 1 on the way); brothers: Dale Christofferson and his wife Ruth, Neil Christofferson and his wife Susan, and Bruce Lungwitz and his wife Julie; sisters Linda Jenkins, Shirley Wilson, and Brenda Knapp; nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ray, brothers Earl Wayne Lungwitz and Ronnie Steffens.
