Dorothy M. Nelson
Dorothy Mae (Lipke) Nelson, 98, entered into rest Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Sidney Regional Medical Center Extended Care. She was born on a farm southeast of Ithaca, NE in Saunders County on April 16, 1920 to Ed & Hattie (Mays) Lipke. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, January 11th at the Prairie West Church in Potter with Pastor Betsy Gallaway-Carew officiating. Graveside services will follow in the Potter Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, January 10th from 1:00 to 7:00 at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel with family present from 5:00 to 7:00. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials can be made to Prairie West Church or Potter Community Improvement Fund, POB 67, Potter, NE 69156, for restoration of the American Legion Hall.
Dorothy moved with her family to Cheyenne County in 1928, attended District 77 through 8th grade & graduated from Sidney High School in 1937. She also participated in a 4-H Trip to Washington DC/Niagara Falls, NY in 1936. She served as a 4-H leader for many years. After graduation she taught country schools (1 year in District 11 near Huntsman & 2 years at District 27 southwest of Sidney). She also worked at Hardy Furniture during the summer & fall of 1940, before marrying Wilfred “Nig” Nelson on November 12, 1940. To this union, three “children” were born, daughter Myra, son Kae & daughter Lea. February, 1942 sent “Nig” to San Diego Naval Base where Dorothy soon joined him. Dorothy & daughter Myra returned to Sidney when “Nig” was deployed.
They returned to the farm southeast of Sidney in the fall of 1945 where they resided until 2011. Dorothy was instrumental in the farm business & upkeep of their property, even trimmed trees with her chain saw & hand saws well into her late 80’s. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, social clubs WMB Club & MIC Club, Wheat Hearts, American Legion Auxiliary & volunteered at the Cheyenne Veterans Hospital. Always having “projects to do”, she never sat idly, either knitting, crocheting, mending, reading, etc.
She is survived by daughter Myra (Ken) Noteboom, son Kae (Cheryl) Nelson, daughter Lea Wiemers (Mark Brooks) & unadopted son Chuck (Pat) Hammond; grandsons, Tim (Kelly) Noteboom, Eric Ruppert, Brandon Ruppert, Josh Nelson, Justin Nelson; granddaughters, Robyn (Todd) Anderson, Melissa Constantine, Carolyn (Ercan) McCourt, & Christy & Eric Jensen; 14 great grandchildren & 5 great-great grandchildren & one sister, Margaret (Warren) Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, granddaughter Kristi Noteboom Perrotto, 2 great grandchildren, & brother Robert Schlotz.
