Eugene “Gene” was born Aug 22, 1932 to Edward and Anna (Von Seggern) Meier at the family farm near Lorenzo, NE. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Sidney, NE. He attended school in Lorenzo and graduated in 1950. After graduating from high school, he drove a school bus and upon the death of his father in 1952 he assumed the farming duties for his mother. From 1954 to 1956, Gene served in the United States Army in the 108th Transport Company, being stationed at Mannheim and Heidelberg Germany. Upon discharge from the Army, he returned to Lorenzo where he married his sweetheart Marilyn Sunderman on January 27, 1957. The couple was blessed with four children: Barbara, Virgil and twins, Carol (still born) and Cheryl. Sadly, Cheryl died in a car accident in 1976 at age eleven.
Gene continued farming and in 1970 was one of the first farmers in the area to add a confinement farrow to finish hog unit to his farming operation. He developed a feed ration for newly weaned pigs that was very successful. Gene was an active member of Holy Trinity and St. Paul Lutheran Churches. He took up the game of golf in his retirement years until his loss of eyesight made this hobby impossible.
Gene and Marilyn enjoyed traveling, towing a travel trailer to many states in the winter and finally setting up a permanent one in the tip of Texas where they enjoyed new friends and several months of warm weather each winter.
Gene is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn of 66 years; daughter, Barbara & Paul Miklos of Arvada Colorado; son, Virgil & Debi Meier of Ft Worth TX, six grandchildren, Kelly McCormick, Jamie Lopez, Theo Meier, twins, Sam & Maggie Meier and Jake Meier; great-grandchildren, Jaiden, Aaron, Ava, Alaina and Joshua; sister-in-law, Marian Sunderman, and many nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents: Edward and Anna Meier; twin daughters: Carol and Cheryl, brothers: Edgar, Donald, Daryl, sisters-in-law: Merna, Clara, Jean; brothers-in-law: Maurice Sunderman and his wife Shirley, Raymond Sunderman; nephews: Mervill Meier, Gary Meier, Dean Meier, Ed Bivens, and Stan Sunderman.
