Obituary for John Eberly

John M. Eberly , age 94, of Arvada, CO passed away October 8, 2020 in Denver. A Graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Peetz, CO with Deacon Ronald Michieli officiating. A private family service has taken place. Memorials can be made to the Shrine of St. Anne Building Fund, 7555 Grant Place, Arvada, CO 80002

He was born in Denver on June 15, 1926 at Denver General Hospital. His parents were Anton and Barbara Eberly (Kreager). John’s siblings were Katherine, Anna, Gotlieb, Mary and Barbara. John and his siblings were raised in St. Clara’s Orphanage at 29th & Lowell in Denver. One of his favorite
memories of these years was annual trips to Camp Santa Maria in the mountains.
At the age of 18, John joined the Army and served in the Infantry during World War II. He was
first stationed in Mineral Wells, Texas and then was sent to fight in the Philippines. He was
eventually sent to Hiroshima after it had been bombed. He left the Army after serving for
three years.
After the Army, John went to work at Gates Rubber Company where he met his future wife
Marian Schumacher. They were married in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Peetz, Colorado
in 1948. During layoffs at Gates, he worked as a cab driver and at a gas station. He went to
work at the Rocky Flats plant in 1953. They lived in North Denver and Western Hills before
buying a home in Arvada in 1960. John and Marian were blessed with six children born
between 1949 and 1966. John began attending the Shrine of St Anne church in Arvada in 1960 with his family. He was an usher for many years and helped with the summer bazaar, pancake breakfasts, spaghetti dinners, funeral lunches, etc. John was named the Man of the Year at the Shrine of St Anne for 2017.
John retired in 1988 after 35 years as a metallurgical technician at the Rocky Flats plant. He
enjoyed many hobbies including restoring cars, stamp collecting, playing horseshoes, camping,
fishing, woodworking, locksmithing, reading books, playing poker and bowling. He was a
volunteer at Arvada Reservoir for many years. John was on a senior bowling league until the
age of 92.
In 1982, John and Marian traveled to Hawaii and Queensland, Australia to visit their daughter.
After retirement John and Marian enjoyed travel to Europe, Alaska, Nashville, Branson, New
England, Las Vegas, fishing trips to Manitoba and many other locations.
His family has grown over the years with 7 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. John and
Marian would have celebrated 72 years of marriage next month.
John is survived by his wife Marian, three sons Rodney (Cindy Eberly), Kenneth and Anthony,
three daughters Linda (Mike Schneider), Lorraine (Dana Echter), and Deborah (Tim Carter), 7
grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and all of
his siblings.
