Lois M. Henkle of Sidney, NE peacefully passed away at home with her daughters by her side on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 in Sidney.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 11th in the Evangelical Free Church, Sidney with Pastor Doug Birky officiating. Burial will follow in the Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery in Bridgeport at 2:00 P.M. Friends may stop at Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Tuesday from 1-7:00 P.M. with family present 1-2:00. Lois M. (Edwards) Henkle, daughter of Reverend Fred and Pearl (Fairbanks) Edwards was born on April 25, 1928. As the first born of four; she was joined by brother Paul and sisters Ruth and Esther. Lois lived 35 years in the Bridgeport area on the farm. While her parents worked on the farm, her grandmother cooked and cared for her becoming the most precious person in her life. Lois was raised a preachers daughter loving the lord. Coming from generations of preacher’s made her the loving and caring person she was.
On June 27, 1945 she married Sam J. Arellano. To this union six children were born, Lois Barbara, Sam Floyd, Madalyn, Richard, Steven and Anita. In 1964 the Depot transferred the family to Williams, AZ, where Sam worked at Camp Navajo Army Base for a year. Sam then went to Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX where the family lived for 5 years, retiring from the government, the family moved back to Nebraska in 1970. Lois was finally able to work as her last child was in school full time. She worked for the Sidney Public Schools in the lunch room for a short period then at the rest home in Sidney. Her favorite job was at J.C. Penny’s in the material department. Lois loved to embroidery, sew and was very good at making clothes for the family including prom dresses and wedding gowns. She was a foster mom and took in any child that needed love or was hungry. She patched their clothes and made sure they attended school and church. Someone said once, if you can’t find your child, look at the Arellano house. Lois had a big heart and loved to give, never doing for herself. She loved cooking for anyone that walked through her door. She raised her children in church, camps, bible school, tent meetings and attended church three times a week. Lois was a Sunday School teacher, played the piano on occasion at her father’s church and was a 4-H leader. In the 40’s, Lois met her lifelong friend Nellie and they enjoyed raising their children together. Lois taught herself to speak Spanish and make tortillas that were loved and enjoyed by all. She could have won the Nobel Prize for her pie crust, had a knack for baking bread and cinnamon rolls, and loved planting gardens, strawberry patches and spending time arranging bouquets.
In 1977 the love of her life passed away. She left her job at Penny’s and went to work at Prestolite until 1979 when she married Ralph Henkle and moved to Idaho with their two youngest children. Lois worked a season at Ore-Ida Foods inspecting potatoes and was employed at Cal-Ranch and Prices Café as a hostess. She began selling Avon and became 50/50 with the company receiving Sales Rep of the year in Boise, ID earning a car and Albie Awards. Lois and Ralph raised cows, planted huge gardens and were very active in the church. They enjoyed camping and going to the hot springs. In May of 1994 they moved back to Sidney and retired. She enjoyed her family, strawberry gardens and peach trees.
Lois was handpicked from Heaven. She enjoyed the simple things in life such as going out to eat, sweets, listening to church music and being with her family. Her children were privileged to have her as a mom. They broke the mold in Heaven when they sent her to be our mom.
Lois is survived by her children, Sam and wife Carol Arellano of Sidney, Madalyn Kocontes of Wisconsin, Richard and wife Sue, Steven and wife Bev Arellano, Anita and husband Joel Cure, all of Sidney; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; (1) brother Paul and wife Verlyn Edwards of Denver, CO; (1) sister Esther Stevens of Washington and several nieces and nephews.
Lois was preceded in death by both her husband’s: Sam Arellano and Ralph Henkle; her maternal and paternal grandparents; parents: Fred and Pearl Edwards; (1) sister Ruth Richling; (1) sister-in-law Norma Edwards; (1) daughter Lois Barbara McLean; granddaughter Nichole Clark and her lifelong friend Nellie Ochoa Guerra.
