Patty Sue (Jelinek) Gorman, the daughter of Deward “Dude” and Florence (Siemers) Jelinek was born on November 14, 1950 in Sidney. She graduated from Sidney High School in 1968. While in School, she was active in FHA, GAA, Pep Band, Pep Club, Legislator, Secretary of State and was in the Rose Bowl Parade. On Patty’s second birthday, her parents opened Dude’s Brandin’ Iron Lounge and on her twelfth birthday, the business expanded and opened Dude’s Steakhouse. Three years later Dude’s Backroom Dance Hall was opened. This is where her personality also shined.
While working the family business, she met Larry Gorman who would eventually become her husband. Patty worked the family business until moving to Denver, CO to attend Beauty School. Patty then relocated to California for a year working at a restaurant where she got to meet many famous personalities. One of those she enjoyed serving every Sunday was Tim Conway. Upon moving back to Sidney, Patty married her High School Sweetheart and Soulmate, Larry on June 15, 1974 in her parent’s back yard. For the next forty-five years, Patty remained active in running the business with her husband and family with her charismatic personality, strong work ethic and dedication.
Patty enjoyed being socially active in a variety of organizations such as Girl Scouts Troop helper for her daughter Jenni, Den Mother in Cub Scouts for son Joey, Sunday School Teacher for Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Volunteer to the Historical Society and the local museums, Room Mother for her children’s school, Kid’s Plus and MADD. She was honored to be listed in the Who’s Who of Executives in business and nominated as the Nebraska Restauranteur of the Year.
Patty’s family meant the world to her. She devoted her time to make sure they never were without and every need was met. Her grandchildren were everything to her and she was blessed to play an important part in their lives. Patty was outgoing and loved traveling to see the world. She had a decorative and crafty personality. She would help anyone in need with her incredible kindness and generosity by opening her home to anyone. Patty had a smile and laugh that lit up the room. Her personality was truly one in a million. She was passionate about cancer and Alzheimer’s awareness due to her father losing his arm to cancer and family with Alzheimer’s. Memorials can be made to Night of Hope and the Alzheimer’s Association.
