A joyful & loving reunion occurred early the morning of July 26, 2022. The most amazing couple we know are back in each other’s embraces. Dick passed away at his home. He will be greatly missed by all, but we can only imagine how happy Phyllis is to have him with her. May they both rest peacefully, reunited with each other and all their loved ones.
Richard (Dick) Arlyn Ladine was born 12-8-1933 to Art and Elsie (Thieman) Ladine in Sidney, NE at his grandparents Thieman’s home. He was baptized and confirmed in the Grace Lutheran Church, where he remained a member for 77 years, at which time the Church closed. He was a current member of the Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church. He attended school in a rural school, Harmony, through the 8th grade and then Gurley High School and participated in everything and graduated in 1953. Dick attended Boys State in 1952.
Dick fell in love with and married a classmate, Phyllis Joyan Freudenberg on June 17, 1955, at Grace Lutheran Church in Gurley. Dick and Phyllis made their home where Dick was raised, the farm his grandfather Andy Ladine had homesteaded in 1905. Dick farmed with his father and later took over the farm himself, also raising hogs, cattle, and chickens. They added two sons, Troy Arthur and Kevin Richard and a daughter, Lori Ann, to their family.
Dick has been a member of the Gurley Lions, Elks, Masons, Eastern Star (where he served as Worthy Patron for several years), NRD board, church council, school board and Youth Group sponsors at Grace Lutheran for many years. He was also a Webelo scout leader, assisted with the Bunker Hillbillies 4-H club and served as Superintendent of the hog barn at the Cheyenne County Fair for many years. Dick loved family gatherings and loved to play cards.
They moved into Gurley in 1996 after Dick retired from farming. After Dick retired from farming, he went to work at Cabela’s in the Bargain Cave for 18 years-a job that fit his outgoing personality. He enjoyed being around people and always had a story to tell. He then worked at the Sidney Regional Medical Center as a greeter for 5 years. Again, a job that brought him into contact with many different people, a job for which he was uniquely qualified.
Dick is survived by daughter Lori and husband Tom Coviello of Dalton and son Troy Ladine of Hallsville, TX; grandchildren Monica and husband James Beardsley of Kansas, Kayla and husband Chris Paris of Iowa, Rachel & Erin Ladine of Texas; step grandchildren Tom Coviello & Melissa and husband Troy Hedin; great grandchildren Damian, Katiera, Raevyn & Hadley Beardsley, Savanna and husband Avery Hufford, Kevin, Alexia, Nolan Miller, Dylan Chaon; step greats Teagan and wife Audrey, Gabrielle & Brennan Coviello, Trevor Krason; great great grands Everleigh Miller, Adeline & Cole Coviello; brothers Duane & Lyal and wife Joan Ladine, sister Joyce Gibbons, very special sister-in-law Marvel Freudenberg Moore and numerous cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dick was preceded in death by both of his parents, loving wife, Phyllis (of 65 years) July 15, 2020, one son, Kevin in 1987, grandson, Brandon in 2006 and numerous close family members.
Memorials have been designated to the Shriners Hospital and/or the Gurley Rescue Unit.
