Robert J. Kelly

Robert J. Kelly, age 75, of Bridgeport, NE and formerly of Sidney passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2019 in Bridgeport. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, October 11, 2019 in the Carpenter-Breland Funeral Home in McCook with Pastor Rodney Heilburn officiating. Inurnment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook. Cremation has been held. Robert James Kelly was born February 21, 1944 at McCook, NE, to James Raymond and Helen Julia (Schmid) Kelly. He attended a rural grade school and graduated from Red Willow High School. Bob was united in marriage to Sharee Schick at the Methodist Church in Curtis, NE on August 30, 1966. Bob and Sharee were divorced in 2000.
Bob’s college years included attending McCook Jr. College receiving an A.A. Degree, University of Nebraska at Lincoln, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture Education, Agriculture Economics and a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education and Adult Education. He raised certified seed wheat to finance his college education. .
Bob’s work started as a Vocation Ag instructor and Wrestling coach in Howell and Central City, NE. He then worked as a Fieldman, Merchandiser, Operations Manager, Grain Division Manager and Branch Manager at Coops in Omaha, Grand Island, Wood River, Eddyville, Ord and Sidney, NE. He was an active Member and chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Nebraska Grain and Feed Dealers Association. He participated in Mission Work Camp in Costa Rica in 1988 and Mission Study Tour in Nicaragua in 1990. He established a large customer base and customer calling program that resulted in major origination of grain for elevators and cross-country programs at Crossroad Coop, establishing a farm to market concept of trading corn in feedlots, customer marketing classes to increase patron’s knowledge in marketing and special programs with Union Pacific Railroad to initiate shipping large volumes of grain. He was active in Toastmaster’s for (4) years, was President of the Ord Chamber of Commerce, and was a past-chair of Social Concerns Committee at Hastings Grace United Methodist Church, Loup City United Methodist Church, and Rushville United Methodist Church.
Bob’s hobbies and interest included being with family, friends, restoration of classic cars, motorcycle touring and collecting art prints.
Bob is survived by (3) daughters, Kim Rios of Lexington, NE, Mary Svedlinka of Crete, NE, Brenda Kettler of Albion, NE; (1) sister, Gwen Miller of Culbertson, NE; Caregiver of 13 years, Barbara Schlieker, (14) grandchildren, (10) great-grandchildren, and (3) nieces. Bob is also fondly and respectfully remembered by many friends, co-workers in all the places he lived and worked.
He was preceded in death by (1) son, Mark Kelly and (1) brother-in-law, Don Miller.
