She hitchhiked across the country ending up in New York City where she worked as a receptionist and attended Columbia University for a time. She traveled the USA, and other countries of Mexico and Borneo. She also lived in the community of Skymont in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in the early 70’s along with friends and the famous Arquette acting family.
She returned to California where she earned her Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts and Master Degree of Science- Psychology. She was a family therapist and mental health counselor in California for many years. In 1992 Rose was honored by the American Indian community at a “Honor Gathering” Celebration and Pow Wow at Butte Community College for her counseling at the Native American Health Center. She spent time in South Dakota and California with her beloved Lakota friends.
In 1998 Rose purchased a piece of property sight unseen in Chappell, NE where she planned to fix up the cottage and flip it to retire to Santa Fe, NM. She loaded all of her earthly belongings into her little 1993 Nissan pickup and headed east to Nebraska. However, in Chappell, Rose finally took off her wandering shoes and found a peaceful place to call home, plant flowers, trees and raise vegetables.
In 2003 she was persuaded to come out of retirement for a time to teach Psychology at Western Nebraska Community College in Sidney, NE. Her students have said she was a wonderful instructor.
She co-directed community plays at the Hippodrome in Julesburg, CO and children’s theater workshops at the Chappell Library. She was a member of the Just Writers group of other artists and writers in Garden County, publishing the book, “Serendipity: An Anthropology of Stories and Poetry.” She was a member of Prairie Builders Chapter of Habitat for Humanity and a volunteer member of the Organic Crop Improvement Association International, Inc. She became a master gardener and member of the Chappell Garden Club.
She became a resident of the Regional West Garden County nursing home by her own decision in July of 2021 when her health was failing. She made many new friends with the loving staff at RWGC- NH. She continued until her last days to be a sassy, stubborn, but loving counselor and instructor.
She was preceded in death by her best friend, Lois Nelson. She is survived by her loving friends that became family, Corinne (Coco) Fischer and husband, Steven of Chappell, NE; Hasan and Malama MacNeil of Chico, CA and their families. She also leaves behind many friends, neighbors, students and the wonderful people of Chappell whom she loved and loved her.
