Roy Lawrence “Larry” Hammond was born May 2, 1968 in Longmont, CO., to Charles and Virginia
(McSherry) Hammond. He grew up on a farm near Dalton and enjoyed family reunions at Lake McConaughy. From a very early age, Larry was a computer genius. In high school, he was the one school staff went to when they had computer problems – basically he was the IT department. He graduated from Leyton High School in 1986, where he played football and basketball.
He attended UNL before enlisting in the Navy in 1987. He proudly served on nuclear submarines
including the USS Los Angeles, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense
Service Medal. Larry achieved the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class before he was honorably discharged in
1993.
He was united in marriage to Joyce Stacy in 1998. To this union, two children, Cassidy and Shawn, were
born. Spending time with his kids was important to Larry. He also enjoyed boating, water sports, spending time at the lake camping and fishing. He enjoyed hanging out with high school friends and reminiscing about his younger days. Larry loved the blues and jazz. His favorites include Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Creedence Clearwater Revival, My Chemical Romance, Reel Big Fish, The Rolling Stones and Jonny Lang. Now his son Shawn shares a lot of the same tastes in music. Larry also loved watching and talking about Husker football with family and friends.
Larry was a hard worker and always worked towards providing a better life for his family. His true
passion though was always his computers and electronics. He loved all the newest technologies and he
was amazingly brilliant at quickly figuring them out. He also enjoyed computer games (both playing and
creating them). Larry worked in various computer/ technology jobs with employers including Hudl and
Facebook until his passing.
He is survived by his daughter Cassidy of Sidney; son Shawn of Arlington, VA.; father Charles, wife
Patricia Hammond of Sidney; brother Michael, wife Jenny Hammond of Seward, Neb.; nephews Parker
and Tyler; Aunt Pam, husband Phil Cronk of Stillwater, Okla.; Uncle Kevin, wife Patty Hammond of
Lincoln, NE.; former wife Joyce Backer of Sidney; stepson Tory; and many cousins and friends.
He is preceded in death by his mother Virginia; grandparents Bill and Gwen Hammond and George and Georgia McSherry.
