Russel E. Stickley

Russel E. Stickley, 81, passed away peacefully at home, June 9, 2020 after a brief battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, June 16, 2020 in the First United Methodist Church in Sidney, NE with Pastor Corey Jenkins officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Monday from 1-7:00 P.M. to sign Russel’s register book and leave condolences for the family. Memorials are being established. Russel Edward Stickley was born in Ogallala, NE on October 24, 1938 to Louis Ernest and Margaret Emma (Houser) Stickley. He graduated with the class of 1957 from Lodgepole, NE and married his high school sweetheart, Lucille Ellen Haskell on June 5, 1959 at Kowanda Methodist Church in rural Garden County, NE. To this union, three children were born: Cynthia Ann, Russel Edward, Jr. and Steven Scott.
Russ enlisted in the United States Navy on January 12, 1958 and was stationed in Pensacola, FL and Hanford, CA aboard the USS Oriskany aircraft carrier. He was honorably discharged in 1962. After his service to his country, he worked at various jobs in the North Platte and Ogallala areas until joining Wheatbelt Public Power District in Sidney in 1972. There he worked as a heavy equipment operator for 31 years until his retirement.
He was passionate about serving as an officer for the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans and being a part of the honor guard firing squad for the American Legion. He also loved preparing prime rib dinners for family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Lucille; children, Cindy (Doug) Grauberger of Mitchell, NE, Russ Jr (Pam) Stickley of Collinsville, OK and Steve (Vicki) Stickley of Park City, KS; grandchildren, Kevin, Andrew, Kristin, Ashley (Justin), Austin, Skylar, Ethan and McKenna; step-grandchildren, Ashley, Zachery (Emily) and Wyatt (Bailey); step-great-grandchildren, Rylee, Waylon and Baylor; sister Carolyn (Ralph) Osborn, brothers-in-law James (Patricia) Haskell and Neil Merrihew, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Virginia Davis and Lois Keys, his brother Donald Stickley, sisters-in-law Joan Mashek and Marcella Merrihew and brothers-in-law, Thomas Haskell and Jack Keys.
