Stanley Raddatz passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at his home in Lorenzo, NE.
There will be a visitation with family present at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Monday, March 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00. Graveside services will take place at Greenwood Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to: Night of HOPE Walk for Cancer; Rural Fire Department District #1; or Vets Honor Flight. Stanley (Stan) was the last surviving child of the family of eight born to Otto & Emma (Ratsch) Raddatz on February 4, 1921. He grew up on the family farm west of Lorenzo and graduated from Lorenzo High School in 1938. He then enrolled in Business School for two years. He accepted employment at the War Department in Washington, D.C. at the age of 19. After Pearl Harbor in 1941, he returned home to volunteer for service on July 15, 1942, being stationed in Alaska. In April of 1945, he met the love of his life and active partner, Velma Ream. They were united in marriage June 17, 1945, in South Dakota. To this union three children were born—Gale, Jo Ann & Jerry. He completed his service in the Army in November of 1945. Stan and Velma then returned to the family farm to start his career in farming lasting 73 years. Farming was his life and hobby. In his life he saw the evolution of farming from horses pulling wagons and machinery to GPS driving tractors and combines. In the winter months they enjoyed traveling to many states, including driving down Fifth Avenue in New York City to Times Square and Rockefeller Center. They also took seven cruises, with trips to Switzerland, Germany, Hawaii and Canada.
Stan is survived by his wife, Velma of 73 years, his son, Gale (Linda) and daughter, Jo Ann (John) Hurd, 7 Grandchildren, 11 Great-Grandchilden, 3 Great-Great Grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jerry; brothers, Paul (infancy), Ervin, Otto (Tafiel), William and sisters, Bertha, Ethel and Violet.
