Tom was born April 18, 1950 to Lyle and Bonnie (Smith) Chryst in Sidney, NE. He attended school through Senior year at Sidney Public School. After graduation he joined the United States Army, serving during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1971. He married Ruby Ann (Jenks) Chryst and together they welcomed two children, Tommie Alan and Sarah Kathleen. He worked as a lineman for Wheatbelt Public Power for over 25 years. This job took the family to Oshkosh, NE.
He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, shooting pool and watching sports, live and on T.V. He also enjoyed woodworking, building special projects for friends and family. Tom was always willing to help others, mowing lawns and fixing whatever needed fixed. He would toss the ball and work on baseball skills or play a board game, anytime. Most warm spring and summer nights you would find him hunting nightcrawlers for his fishing bait. Tom could have driven the roads to Island and Crescent Lakes blindfolded. He’d bait your hook, spit on the worm for “good luck” and off you’d go, guaranteed to catch a big one. He loved his family unconditionally and would do anything for them.
Tom will be missed by: his children, Tommie Chryst Jr., of Genoa, NE (Catherine Chryst, Trigger and Rogen of Cheyenne, WY, Clayton Chryst of Callaway, NE, and step-daughter Shay Kanter of Palmer, NE) and Sarah (Justin) Sybrant ( Morgan and Kayla) of Bassett, NE; his sisters, Deb Dolan of Sidney, NE and Sandy (Jack) Applegate of Broomfield, CO; step-sisters Linda Shaffer of Birch Tree, MO, June (Ron) Draper, Gurley, NE, Kathy (Myron) Woody of Sidney, NE; and many extended family members and dear friends.
He will be having a reunion with: his father, Lyle Chryst; mother, Bonnie (Smith-Chryst) Applegate; step-mother Norma Chryst who passed before him and several relatives and acquaintances who passed before him.
Memorial money donated will be divided among Community Memorial Health Center, Asera Care Hospice and Madonna Rehabilitation in Omaha, NE.
