He was born, February 11, 1943, in rural Buffalo County, NE to Harold A. and Johanna Louise (Marten) Britton. He was baptized and confirmed in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Merna, NE.
He grew up southwest of Broken Bow, NE, attending Ryno country school, and then Broken Bow High School as part of the Class of 1961.
Bill met his wife Mary E. Watts while they were both attending the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. He turned cartwheels across the Ag Campus quadrangle to get her attention and he kept that attention for 57 blessed and loving years of marriage. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1964 with a Bachelor's of Science in Agronomy.
Bill brought his wife and daughter to put down permanent roots in Oshkosh, NE when he took a position with the Soil Conservation Service as a range conservationist. After leaving the SCS, he was self-employed building dams, terraces, and cleaning irrigation canals, trimming trees, framing and matting pictures, and until last fall was only semi-retired as he still mowed the airport.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his passion was photography. His favorite photographic subject was steam locomotives. He paid close attention to when the Union Pacific would be rolling their steam engines east from Cheyenne, so that he could get shots of them. He took vacations to ride trains, such as the Narrow Gauge lines from Silverton to Durango, CO and the Cumbres & Toltec in New Mexico.
Bill was a faithful servant of the Lord. He and his wife, Mary were active members at Zion Lutheran in Chappell, NE. Bill served many years as Trustee and then Elder. Their faith was part of the strong foundation of their marriage.
William H. Britton was preceded in death by his father and mother, Harold and Louise Britton. He also lost his younger brother Joe D. Britton, along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is survived by his wife Mary of Oshkosh, NE; his daughters Christine Kafonek and Cassandra Britton of Lincoln, NE; a granddaughter Jacqueline Sartwell and great-granddaughters Tisha Birchard and Aliyah Kate Marie of Independence, MO.
