Elmer  Gabel
Elmer Gabel, age 88 of Sidney, NE passed away on Friday, July 5, 2013 at the Western Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Scottsbluff.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, July 9th in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Sidney. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Monday from 1-7: 00 P.M.
Memorial contributions may be made in Elmer’s name to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Elmer Gabel, the son of Henry and Margret (Pauly) Gabel, was born on November 21, 1924 at Scottsbluff, NE. He attended Victory Hill Country School, returning to the family farm following his education. On December 28, 1948, Elmer enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Riley, KS, receiving his honorable discharge on May 20, 1949. On August 26, 1949, Elmer was united in marriage to Betty Schnell at Scottsbluff. They moved to Sidney and began farming west of town. In the Spring of 1972, he began a career of more than twenty-nine years working for the Cheyenne County Department of Roads as a full-time and part-time employee.
Elmer’s love of farming continued over the years and he would jump at the chance to help friends when needed. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and was active in their Dart Ball League. Elmer enjoyed, fishing, pheasant hunting, bowling and was an avid Husker Football Fan and cherished time spent with his family.
Survivors include his wife Betty of Sidney; (1) daughter: Rhonda Schafer and husband John of Scottsbluff; (1) son: Greg Gabel and wife Teri of Sidney; (3) grandchildren: Ashley Krzywicki and husband Josh of Cheyenne, WY, Tyler Gabel of Pine Bluffs, WY and Chelsea Gabel of Sidney; (1) great-granddaughter: Brea Krzywicki of Cheyenne; (1) brother-in-law: Don Schnell of Hubbard, TX and (1) sister-in-law: Edna Jantz of Lochbuie, CO.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, (5) brothers: John, Leslie, Raymond, Harry and Adam and (1) sister: Anna Eskam.
