Obituary

Jack Edward Wiedeburg, former long-time resident of Sidney, passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, July 22, while in hospice care at Liberty Hospital after a brief battle with pneumonia. All four of his children were able to spend time with him in the days just before his passing.

Jack was the youngest of four children born to Charles (Charlie) and Clara Wiedeburg on June 22, 1934 in Hillsdale, Wyoming. With his family later moving to Sidney, NE, he graduated from Sidney High School in 1952. Jack developed his skill for cooking while serving as a cook in the US Army from May, 1954 to May, 1956. Jack met and married Karen Jeanne Fredrick in Sidney on February 17, 1957, and they had four children together. Jack began a long-time career as a butcher and meat cutter at Star Market, Osage Grocery and Northside Market, all in Sidney. He and Karen later purchased Northside Market where they owned and operated the neighborhood grocery until 1977. After a brief ownership of the Montgomery Wards store in Sidney, Jack returned to a career in meat cutting at Town and Country Market in Sidney (now Sonny’s), and Town and Country Market in Scottsbluff. He later served as a cook at the Burlington Inn in Burlington, Colorado.

Jack loved horses, and enjoyed them with his children as they were involved in 4-H and the all-girls drill team, The Cheyenettes. While living in Sidney, he was also very active in the Lodgepole Valley Saddle Club, and was a member of the Sidney Elks Club. During his retirement, he most enjoyed attending countless school events and ball games with his great grandchildren.

Throughout his life Jack was known as a talker and a story teller. Whether it was a customer at Northside Market, the postal workers who served him, a cashier at the grocery store, the receptionist at the doctor’s office or the teller at the bank, there was always a conversation to be had with Jack. He also had a memory that would surpass that of all four of his children’s combined. He was truly a friend to all, and a stranger to none.

Jack is survived by his children Lynda (Keith) Snodgrass (Liberty, MO), Chris (Steve) Rile (Spokane, WA), Fred (Donna) Wiedeburg (Sidney, NE), and Mark (Carol) Wiedeburg (Yakima, WA), 8 grandchildren (Josh, Ryan, Sarah, Allison, Hannah, Hailey, Meghan and Jachob) and 4 great grandchildren (Harley, Braxton, Dylan and Avory), and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 sisters Naomi Craig, Mary Siefer and Marian Larson.

Jack will later be placed to rest in Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney at a date to be determined.
