I first met Pat on the north side of Sidney when we were in kindergarten. I moved away going into 1st grade and I lost contact with Pat for a couple of years. We connected again in 4th grade and we were class mates from then to high school. So Pat is my longest friend, then Irma and Elaine. We were all good friends growing up and I have so many good memories of that time. A time that only us four friends know about. When Pat and I got married, we drifted apart. Until the Sioux Army Depot closed and I moved to California with my husband and family. Across the street, the Cox’s were hosting some out of town friends, and it was Pat and Les Beeken. We started up right where we left off.
When we moved back to Sidney and moved into the house on Cedar. I was shopping at the northside grocery store and there was Pat. We were practically neighbors on the Northside. And led us to many many lunches, coffee, shopping, trips, and conversations. One time at a Sioux Army Depot reunion at legion park, we found out Pat, Les and I all shared the same birth day. August 11.
Pat, Elaine and I all have a passion for reading. We were all in a subscription service for monthly books and then we shared all those books. We had our code, so we knew who had read which books and who got the books next. This sharing of books lasted until just a few months ago. I really miss sharing my passion for reading with Pat.
One of the last times I saw Pat was on our mutual birthday. I was having a party in the park to celebrate my 85th birthday. I invited Pat and her daughter, Sandy, brought her from Cheyenne. I was so happy to see Pat. But I have to admit, I told Pat the wrong day. So Sandy and Pat came the day before. It was really better, because I got to visit with Pat for a long afternoon without the distraction of all the party guests. But I did feel bad cause, Pat missed out on the party.
Pat, I love you and I miss you something fierce. Even though we didn’t get to see one another that often these last few years, I knew you were there to talk to if I needed to talk to you. Your special friend, Lea Hajek.
