"Don't Tell Grandma"

There are so many great memories of Grandpa Fehringer that I could share, but I will talk about one of my favorites as a kid that transferred into a memory as an adult as well. When I ate at Grandma and Grandpa's out at the farm we were always given the greatest meals. The only thing that Grandpa saw wrong with it was that we didn't always get "enough" of the dessert dish! So after we were done eating Grandpa and I would go outside to work on the farm while the girls were doing the dishes. Our first stop was out to the old reliable Toyota where the glove compartment also served duty as a "candy dish". He would get a couple of pieces of candy out, tell me "don't tell Grandma", and then we would get back to work. The great thing about Grandpa is that things never change with him. His positive outlook on life never changed, his ever present smile, love for his family, and of course his sweet tooth! Now that I work at the Co-op in Peetz it just gave him an excuse to come see me more often. He would come down, fill up his car with gas, and then come inside to chat with me for 20-30 minutes. I loved those conversations with him because he always had a new story and could turn a bad day into a great day. After the conversation ended he would go over to the candy rack and grab a "king size" Hershey's bar with Almonds, bring it to the counter, get out his change, and smile while telling me "don't tell Grandma". He first came in five years ago when the candy bars were $1.25, and never got the hang of the change in price when they increased to $1.50. So I would just pay the extra quarter because I didn't have the heart to tell him the price had increased. That was my best memory of the great man who has shaped me in every way. I love you and miss you so much Grandpa!!!!! Brad P.s. Grandpa you owe me thirty two dollars and fifty cents!!!!
